Types of Oil Rig | Offshore Contractors

Rigs are gears that are used in drilling oil or gas from underground reservoirs. There are many types of oil rigs that include platform, jack up, drill ship and Flotels among others. The most common are the semi submersible type. These types operate by drilling a hole in the seabed and then moving to another location. Secondly, there is the platform, which is an immobile structure. It is made of steel and concrete, when oil is located, it is constructed to drill further wells at that location, and these kinds of oil rigs are massive when compared to other types. They also help in producing higher levels of hydrocarbons.

There is the jack up, which unlike the platform, is mobile. They are mostly used in the North Sea. Unlike the semi submersible rig, it has long leg structures that usually sit in the seabed. Raising the rig out of water. Its limitations lies in the depth of the level of water in can operate in, with the highest height being a maximum of five hundred feet.

There is also the drill ship, whose shape like the name suggests, resembles a ship. For this type, it does not require tugboats to place it in its location as opposed to the jack up. However, it is less stable when compared to the submersible. It is recommended for drilling in very deep waters. Notably, there are the floating production and storage units which are attached to the seabeds and produce a place for oil storage. Lastly, there are the flotels which are converted semi submersible. They are attached to a platform by a long gangway in order to allow room more accommodation for more employees. An ace up the sleeve for this type is that, it provides a place for leisure and catering activities.
